Linear and Nonlinear Kelvin–Helmholtz Instability and Magnetohydrodynamic Wave Emission in Sheared Astrophysical Plasma Flows

چکیده
Abstract The evolution of the Kelvin–Helmholtz instability (KHI) and magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) wave emission is investigated at shear-flow boundaries magnetized plasmas. While MHD has been suggested to be only possible during nonlinear stages, we find that there also significant KHI’s linear stages. These emitted waves may have stronger impacts than KHI surface since they can act transport energy away from local region shear flow. removal region, instead just redistribution considered in previous studies, its propagation interface could major implications for astrophysical objects characterized by fast plasma flow shears.

15 صفحه اولGeneration and Instability of Spiral Wakes in Sheared Electron Flows
Images of the electron density of a magnetized electron column illustrate the dynamics of intense vortices moving in a weaker background vorticity. A moving retrograde clump of vorticity generates a spiral wake that then evolves into many long-lived holes, contributing to the late time fluctuations.
متن کاملLinear instability, nonlinear instability, and ligament dynamics in three-dimensional laminar two-layer liquid/liquid flows
We consider the linear and nonlinear stability of two-phase density-matched but viscosity-contrasted fluids subject to laminar Poiseuille flow in a channel, paying particular attention to the formation of three-dimensional waves. A combination of Orr–Sommerfeld–Squire analysis with direct numerical simulation of the three-dimensional two-phase Navier–Stokes equations is used. For the parameter ...

In Part I of this work [Phys. Plasmas 2, 1926 (1995)], the behavior of linearly stable, integrable systems of waves in a simple plasma model was described using a Hamiltonian formulation. Explosive instability arose from nonlinear coupling between positive and negative energy modes, with well-defined threshold amplitudes depending on the physical parameters. In this concluding paper, the nonint...
متن کاملGeneration of a sheared plasma rotation by emission, propagation, and absorption of drift wave packets.
Collisional electron drift wave turbulence generates drift wave packet structures with density and vorticity fluctuations in the central plasma pressure gradient region of a linear plasma device. Tracking these packets reveals that they follow an outward directed spiral-shaped trajectory in the (r,θ) plane, are azimuthally stretched, and develop anisotropy as they approach an axisymmetric, radi...
